Former Nova Scotia deputy premier and cabinet minister Roland “Rollie” Thornhill, who was born in Newfoundland, has died.

Born in Grand Bank in 1935, Thornhill moved to Nova Scotia where he built a long career in public service.

He served as mayor of Dartmouth before entering provincial politics, and represented Dartmouth South as a Progressive Conservative MLA from 1974 to 1993.

During his time in the Nova Scotia legislature, Thornhill held several cabinet portfolios, including Development, Environment, Industry, Tourism and Community Services.

He also served as deputy premier under former premier John Buchanan.

Before politics, Thornhill served with the Royal Canadian Air Force and worked in the insurance industry.

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston remembered Thornhill as a dedicated public servant with a sharp wit and a commitment to his community.

Thornhill died July 16 at the age of 90.
