The RNC says the death of a 6-year-old child, killed after being struck by an alleged impaired driver, was a call that first responders will never get over.

The little boy was struck at the intersection of O’Leary Avenue and Thorburn Road last Thursday and has since succumbed to his injuries.

Thirty-two-year-old Tyler Julian Day is now facing charges including impaired driving causing death, leaving the scene of an accident causing death, and dangerous driving causing death.

Day, who appeared in court yesterday, was remanded to custody pending a bail hearing scheduled for this morning.

RNC Constable Stephanie Myers says the incident has affected a large number of people – from the grieving family, to first responders and to the community as a whole.

“The family has lost their six-year-old child as a result of the actions of this man. The first responders that responded, my colleagues within the RNC, this is a call that will stick with them for the rest of their career.”

She says while responding to such matters is what they sign up for, “you hope that it’s never you that responds to these calls.”

Constable Myers says there have been a “significant amount” of impaired driving charges laid in recent months.

“That’s nothing new unfortunately, for the RNC within our communities,” she told reporters yesterday. “Impaired driving is a choice that drivers make. It is absolutely unacceptable, and it affects families, it affects lives. Families are devastated because of the outcomes, and because of the choices that those drivers make.”
