Plans are in the works to have the old Mews Centre torn down.

Ward 3 Councillor Greg Noseworthy posted the news this morning.

He says the condition of the old recreation facility is such that council had decided to demolish the building.

“It’s got to come down. We’re at that point where it’s expensive to maintain what is an empty building, and in the best interest of the community, and the best interest of taxpayers, we’ve made the decision to demolish the old Mews.”

He says the city will retain ownership of the property with plans for future development.

“We haven’t made any final decisions just yet, but whatever we do decide to do with it, we’re going to make sure that it’s in the best interest of the community. There’s obviously a number of services that the city provides broadly to the St. John’s, and greater St. John’s area, so we want to make sure that we are getting this right, and that means having that infrastructure under the umbrella of the city of St. John’s.”

A contract to demolish the structure is expected in the fall.
