The RNC is offering some reminders to people about securing their property to prevent crimes of opportunity.

The number of reported break-ins typically rise during the summer months, and the Constabulary says there are some proactive measures that property owners can take to prevent thieves from making off with your stuff.

RNC Constable Steph Myers says many crimes don’t have to involve damage.

“It doesn’t mean that a window was smashed, many times it’s just a theft from a…vehicle. So, the doors are left unlocked, the person is given that crime of opportunity, they open the door, grab the belongings, and they’re gone.”

The RNC suggests that people keep their valuables out of sight, never leave your wallet in a vehicle, don’t hide your house keys in “secret places” or leave keys in your vehicle, and ensure that ladders, garden equipment and work tools are removed from your property as they can be used to gain access to your home.

The RNC says you can protect yourself from being targeted by:

• • Keeping valuables out of sight. Always bring items inside your house, garage or shed where they can be locked away securely.
  • Don’t leave wallets in vehicles.
  • Do not hide house keys in secret places or leave vehicle keys in your vehicle. Instead, leave a house key with a trusted neighbor or friend.
  • Ensure that ladders, garden equipment and work tools are removed from the property. These items could potentially be used to break into your home.
  • Secure your home and surroundings and have a well-lit exterior.
  • Place valuable and irreplaceable items in a safe or remove the items from plain view and hide them somewhere safe.
  • Give your home the appearance of being occupied. Turn lights on timers and leave the radio on. Arrange for a neighbour to regularly check on your home, mow your lawn, and move vehicles in the driveway.
  • Never advertise your absence on social media.
