From the Republic of Doyle, and now to a Netflix series ‘Below’ – the local television and film industry is continuing to grow.
That’s according to actor Allan Hawco, who is in the midst of shooting his third season of the CBC television series Saint Pierre in Mount Pearl.
Hawco, who helped create the show, plays detective Donny Fitzpatrick.
He says he never views other local productions as competition, because everyone is collectively working toward building the local film industry.
Hawco cites local talents like such as Tommy Sexton, Gordon Pinsent and Mark Critch – who started the foundation for the industry in St. John’s, and Republic of Doyle built off of that.
“And now, we’re not the only show here.” said Hawco, “when Hudson and Rex started filming, I was so happy because we stopped producing around that time and all of our crew had jobs. Then it’s not just about something I’m doing, it’s about growth. Then the Netflix show happens and that’s going to be massive for the province on a global scale.”
He says it all feeds into this “thing” that everyone is benefitting from.
“The more things we make, the more things we get to make” says Hawco.
