A Placentia landmark that played a vital role in transatlantic communications during the late 19th and early 20th centuries has been recognized with a plaque from Heritage NL.
The Anglo American Telegraph Company Cable Office was built in 1876 after a land line was established between Heart’s Content and Placentia in 1873
The cable station was then connected to Saint Pierre and Nova Scotia by subsea cables, allowing the Placentia office to relay messages between Europe, North America, Saint Pierre and Heart’s Content.
The plaque recognizes the building’s historic, cultural and aesthetic significance.
