Tributes are pouring in from around the world and from here in the province following news of the death of one of the best-known singers and songwriters of all time.

Dolly Parton’s nephew Bryan Seaver confirmed the news yesterday that she had passed away at the age of 80.

Parton’s career dated back to the 1960s when she performed alongside Nashville royalty, Porter Wagoner, but her talent soon eclipsed that of her fellow performer, and she achieved superstar status.

Parton was responsible for countless hits including I will Always Love You, Coat of Many Colors and Jolene – and she penned many more songs for fellow artists.

Among her most famous collaborations included Kenny Rogers and she joined Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt in the supergroup known as ‘Trio.’

Parton also had a successful acting career which was launched with her role in 1980’s 9 to 5.

She influenced and inspired countless performers, and held a number of successful business ventures – including the Dollywood theme park in Tennessee.

Named the richest artist in country music, she was also known for her philanthropy, giving back to numerous causes.

She was reportedly suffering from an undisclosed illness in recent months, but she would not offer details on her health status, only to give periodic updates to the public that she was still alive.

Parton’s publicist has since revealed that she also fought a brief battle with cancer.
