The provincial government is spending another $4-million to help with revitalization of a marine facility on the northeast coast which had fallen into disrepair over the years.

Government had previously committed $10-million to help with bringing the wharf and port in Lewisporte back to life, and yesterday boosted that by $4-million.

The minister of transportation and infrastructure, Barry Petten, says the money will help Lewisporte advance the its vision for transforming the facility into a catalyst for economic development.

Lewisporte used to be the gateway to the north, providing ferry service to and from Labrador.

He says supporting rural Newfoundland and Labrador remains a key component of its economic strategy.

Petten says the town wants to get things going as soon as possible.
