A program aimed at helping children cope with traumatic experiences is expanding its reach across Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Buddy Bear program – facilitated through the VOCM Cares Foundation – the RNC, and local fire departments, provides stuffed bears to children who have experienced trauma.

Previously available only through the St. John’s Fire Department, the program has now expanded to police and fire detachments across the province.

RNC Constable Steph Myers says the bears can help make children feel more comfortable during difficult situations, particularly when speaking with police.

She says child interviews can be intimidating, and having a stuffed bear can help ease anxiety, build trust and make the experience a little less frightening.
