Students at Newfoundland’s Ukrainian Saturday School have started another season.
The Ridna Shkola has registered more than 100 students from Kindergarten to Grade 7.
Executive Director of the Ukrainian National Federation of Canada – Avalon Chapter, Bruce Lilly says the concept behind the weekend school is to keep children in touch with their Ukrainian language, culture and history.
The school, located behind Rennie’s River Elementary, was established in St. John’s in 2024 and is attracting not only newcomers, but Canadian children with Ukrainian roots who want to learn more about their heritage.

He says before Russia’s invasion in 2022, there were more than 1,000 people on the census in Newfoundland who claimed “some type of Ukrainian ancestry.” He believes given world events, people are exploring that ancestry, and they’re also seeing Canadian children enroll.
