The Order of Canada has grown by 51 after an investiture ceremony at Rideau Hall yesterday.
Actor Michael J. Fox received a standing ovation when his name was called.
Fox, who went public with his Parkinson’s diagnosis in 1998, has raised $2.5 billion for research into the disease and has shared candid experiences about the challenges faced by those living with its symptoms.
Also inducted was Captain Sid Hynes of Mount Pearl. He founded Canship Ugland, which manages marine vessels operating worldwide. He is also the executive chair of Oceanex, a prominent player in the east coast transportation industry.
Kenneth Rockwood, a Newfoundlander, Dalhousie University professor and specialist in the study of age-related diseases, is an advocate for older patients.
Philanthropists Maria and Walter Schroeder of Toronto are not from this province, but played a prominent role in the rejuvenation and reopening of the Majestic Theatre downtown St. John’s several years ago.
