“Ready for your next adventure? Discover a thriving career and lifestyle in Calgary, where big city opportunity meets Rocky Mountain living.”
The Calgary Police Service is actively recruiting in the St. John’s area and that’s a concern for the RNC Association.
An ad running in the province boasts “You’ll receive paid training, serve a community that values its police officers, and enjoy 300 days of sunshine in one of Canada’s most livable cities.”
RNCA President Staff Sergeant Mike Summers says officer recruitment and retention has been an issue right across the country – including here in Newfoundland and Labrador. He says the RNCA has been in conversation with the provincial government for years about recruitment and retention and removing barriers for cadets.
He says Calgary is paying its cadets to go through training, “our cadets,” who must go to the Atlantic Police Academy in PEI “receive a bursary, but we’ve been in talks with government to try and remove some of those barriers.” In the meantime, says Summers, they’d like to see more recruitment outside the province to attract officers to Newfoundland and Labrador.
