A couple who made headlines last year after deciding to stay in a community that’s been resettled is doing well and does not regret their decision.
A Facebook page outlining the activities and adventures of Mike and Georgina Parsons, the last permanent residents on Little Bay Islands, has over 30,000 followers.
Georgina shared a video on Facebook Sunday morning that shows contractors working to remove power lines and poles from the community. The workers are staying on Little Bay Islands while completing the job.
Services were officially cut to the community December 31st after full-time residents voted in favour of accepting a resettlement package from government.
Georgina made a poignant post to the Kintsugi Facebook page when the ferry, carrying the last permanent residents, left the wharf on New Year’s Eve.
She calls it a hard day, watching residents crying as the ferry pulled away, but also exciting as she and her husband embarked on their new adventure.
There have been plenty of reunions since then as some of the residents returned over the summer to spend some time on the island.
By mid-October, most of those visitors will have gone again, leaving Mike and Georgina to spend another winter alone on the island. Both say that suits them fine and despite the fact that last winter was a hard one, they were comfortable, well-fed, and happy.
