A St. John’s woman who survived cardiac arrest is sharing her experience with an exhibit of paintings.
Jackie Evans says in some ways it’s easier for her to paint her feelings and experiences than express them, which is what led to “Where My Journey Begins.”
Evans worked full-time until COVID struck, which is when she applied for an ArtsNL grant which she got.

Evans suffered a sudden and massive heart attack six years ago. Were it not for the determined efforts of her daughter and health care workers who performed CPR, she would not have survived.
She says this particular exhibit is very personal, like opening her diary to the world. The paintings follow her journey chronologically, from the beginning of CPR to the end of her stay in hospital. One painting; “Disruption” depicts her swimming back into her body as CPR was being performed on her.
