The House of Assembly is set to adjourn today for the Christmas break but MHAs will likely return for at least one day to deal with the unlocking of some types of pensions.
Service NL Minister Sarah Stoodley confirmed yesterday that the government plans to pass the pension legislation before Christmas, a move the Opposition MHAs support.
The change would involve only certain types of locked-in retirement accounts, or LIRAs.
Officials are reviewing legislation in other provinces to decide how best to proceed, but it’s unlikely the money would be available before Christmas given other steps required by pension administrators before the funds are unlocked.
