Ringing in the new year will look a little different this year due to COVID-19, but one tradition will stay the same.
The City of St. John’s will be going ahead with New Year’s Eve fireworks beginning at 8 p.m. on December 31 in the area of Quidi Vidi.
Those who plan to go watch the fireworks are asked to stay in their vehicles, or if they choose to walk down, are asked to wear a mask and keep socially distant.
Normally the city puts off other events throughout the day to mark the occasion, but not this year.
Mayor Danny Breen says all other New Year’s Eve events have been cancelled.
That means the city will scrap the skating party at the Loop this year. However, the city is developing a list of activities families can participate in during the day that are safe to do under COVID-19 guidelines.
