Schools are open as usual in Deer Lake this morning. The English School District says the chief medical officer has advised them that closure is unnecessary.
Meanwhile, the Town of Deer Lake isn’t taking any chances following the recent cluster of five COVID-19 cases in the area.
Over the weekend, council and staff agreed to shut down two of the busiest hubs—the town office and recreation centre—in an effort to nip the outbreak in the bud.
All non-essential businesses have also been urged to cease regular operations for two weeks, until December 7th, in order to contain the spread of the virus.
Mayor Dean Ball says hopefully everyone will co-operate to ensure it’s a case of short-term pain for long-term gain.
He says it’s important that people remain patient and sympathetic to those afflicted by the virus and instead focus on stopping the spread of COVID-19.
Residents are also asked to stay at home as much as possible, except to pick up essentials such as groceries and medication.
