The parents of a woman who was murdered by an ex-boyfriend seven years ago say there has been little done to address gender-based violence in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Yesterday, the provincial government marked the beginning of 16 days of activism against gender-based violence by raising a purple ribbon flag at Confederation Building.
Phillip and Debbie Hibbs are the parents of Juliane Hibbs.
She, along with her fiance Vincent Dillon, were killed in a murder-suicide by Hibbs’ ex-boyfriend in CBS in 2013.
Phillip Hibbs says the loss of his daughter is something they continue to struggle with to this day.
Despite the presence of many organizations and committees, Hibbs doesn’t believe much has been done to address domestic violence in the province.
He says he hasn’t seen much in the way of concrete action or a way forward but is hopeful the advocacy work being done will lead to change.
