The museum opened in 2003 with a grant from the Johnson Family Foundation, documenting the history of the Newfoundland Railway.

Mayor Danny Breen says the Johnson family was consulted in the decision.
He says the city does not plan to sell the building but does have a shortlist of “exciting” options to re-purpose the structure, with a decision to be announced in early 2021.
The 120-year-old building was designated a National Historic Site in 1988 for its role in marking the important role played by the Newfoundland Railway in the social, economic and political history of the province.
