The Opposition critic for the Status of Women says more supports are needed for the province’s women’s shelters.
Helen Conway Ottenheimer recently toured Iris Kirby House in St. John’s and O’Shaughnessy House in Carbonear.
She says while both facilities have a dedicated and caring staff, both locations were busy and Kirby House is at full capacity—something Conway Ottenheimer calls “worrisome.”
Conway Ottenheimer says greater mental health supports are needed for both shelters from the government.
She says there is a “desperate need” for a mobile crisis unit in the Conception Bay North area, as well as counseling services for addictions and child trauma which she says are lacking.
