Paramedics in St. John’s and Carbonear spent the last two weekends ‘packing the back’ of ambulances with food, clothing and toys for families in need over the holiday season.
The initiative has been ongoing for 10 years, but with many struggling due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for donations has increased.
Operations Manager for Paramedicine and Medical Transport with Eastern Health, Mike Provencher says this may be the best year for donations they’ve had yet.
He says as front line workers paramedics can see the direct effects of the pandemic on families, there is more financial insecurity this year, as many people found themselves out of work.
Provencher says many children will also be separated from their families this year, whether that’s due to travel, or staying socially distant from elderly relatives to keep them safe.
He says a toy will brighten a child’s day, especially this year, that’s been so tough on many.
Provencher says his team of Paramedics look forward to this event every year, and they are grateful for those who were able to donate.
Meanwhile, The Salvation Army is encouraging anyone who needs extra support this year to reach out.
Major Rene Loveless says registration is still open for those looking to avail of donations collected through “Pack the Back.”
Loveless says last year the Salvation Army helped over 2,000 children in the St. John’s area. He projects that those numbers will increase this year.
