RCMP in Nova Scotia will lead the investigation into a complaint of alleged political interference against former Justice Minister Andrew Parsons.
Joe Smyth alleges that Parsons played a role in his being charged with obstruction of justice in connection with a case involving the issuing of a traffic ticket.
The obstruction charge was eventually dismissed by the court.
RCMP in this province have asked Nova Scotia RCMP to lead the investigation into the complaint in the interest of what they’re calling “an independent investigation and transparent process.”
Nova Scotia RCMP are now reviewing the complaint to determine investigative steps, while officers in this province may be called in to support the investigation, as needed.
Premier’s Office says No Changes to Cabinet
Meanwhile, the Premier’s Office says there will be no cabinet changes sparked by the investigation.
A statement released Monday evening references previous findings by both the Chief of the RNC and the Director of Public Prosecutions who both publicly confirmed that there was no interference in the matter.
As such, the Premier’s Office says the Minister’s ability to serve is not impeded, and thus, there will be no changes made to the cabinet.
