PerSIStence Theatre has launched several projects under the Votes for Women 100 initiative to commemorate the centennial anniversary of women first gaining the right to vote in Newfoundland and Labrador.
It was in 1921 when property-owning women gained the right to vote in municipal elections in what was then the Dominion of Newfoundland.
According to the project’s steering committee chairperson, Dr. Margot Duley, the first women voted on December 15, 1921.
Although there was still a long way to go, Duley argues that the vote was more than a vote, it was a “galvanizing symbol in a March towards equality.”
PerSIStence Threatre will undertake four projects to mark the milestone:
- a monthly Ladies’ Reading Room series;
- a Women’s March to be held on October 23;
- live performances of the new play The Mirror, which is about the life of Armine Nutting Gosling and her role in the suffrage movement; and
- the commissioning of a statue of Gosling—for which they hope to break ground in Bannerman Park this fall.
