The mandatory mask rule is being lifted in Newfoundland and Labrador just as the clock strikes midnight Monday, or 12:01 am Tuesday.
Premier Andrew Furey says it is still someone’s choice if they so choose to wear a mask.
Dr. Janice Fitzgerald says masking is still recommended indoors but are not required in places such as lounges, restaurants and gyms.
Indoor gatherings are being expanded to 500 people as of Tuesday.
Dr. Fitzgerald says the way to head off another wave is to get vaccinated.
As for what K-12 school will look like in September, Premier Furey says the back-to-school plan will be announced by Dr. Fitzgerald and Education Minister Tom Osborne soon.
Two New Cases
There are two new cases of COVID-19 today, both in the Eastern Health region—a male and a female, each over the age of 70 and each related to travel.
Sixty per cent of the eligible population has been fully vaccinated while 84 per cent has had their first.
Health Minister John Haggie says there is a gap in vaccination in the 20-39 age group.
