It was 20 years ago today that the Twin Towers in New York City were the target of a terror attack.
On September 11, 2001, a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks against the United States played out on commercial airliners.
At 8:46 a.m., American Airlines Flight 11 was flown into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Seventeen minutes later, United Airlines Flight 175 hit the South Tower.
Around 3,000 people were killed in the attacks and recovery efforts and 25,000 more were injured.
Thousands of international travelers landed in Newfoundland and Labrador on 75 planes as the American airspace closed.
The Town of Gander and the surrounding area famously took in passengers from 38 planes, with community buildings, homes, and properties opening their doors to those displaced by the disaster.
