The newly re-elected MP for the federal riding of Labrador believes an increased focus needs to be put on Search and Rescue resources in the region.
The search for two missing fishermen off the coast of Labrador was called off on Tuesday. The file remains active as a missing persons file.
The search was initially called off and handed over to the RCMP after two days, but was later reinstated, including the use of technology from several private companies.
Yvonne Jones says the problems faced in Labrador are not unique to that area, noting that many northern areas across the country see the same problems with Search and Rescue.
Jones cites the restrictions on the search effort being initially turned over to the RCMP. She says in that area there is one detachment with a couple of officers and no other resources. She says it made no sense for an agency with lots of resources at their disposal to turn the search over to another agency with no resources.
