The federal and provincial governments reached an agreement with the Innu Nation that provides for consultation with the Innu on the financial restructuring of the Lower Churchill project as part of Rate Mitigation efforts.
The agreement, announced on the eve of the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation came after a joint request was made to delay a decision on a court injunction filed by the Innu Nation after the federal government’s Rate Mitigation plan was announced earlier this year.
The Innu argued they had not been consulted as members of a Lands Benefit Agreement that took decades to hammer out, and feared that their rights might not be protected when they couldn’t get the details of the Rate Mitigation deal.
The Innu Nation has now agreed to withdraw its injunction application and discontinue the litigation process.
The deadline for the formal signing of the Rate Mitigation deal, that will prevent electricity rates from spiking once Muskrat Falls comes online was originally set for September 30th.
