“Everybody’s getting paid.”
That’s the message Registered Nurses Union President Yvette Coffey has received from the regional health authorities hit by a cyber attack that has paralysed their IT systems.
Eastern Health says IT systems are slowly being brought back and as of yesterday, their payroll system was unaffected.
RNU President Yvette Coffey says members were challenged by having to revert back to recording patient information with pen and paper—some more than others—but nurses stepped up and adjusted to meet the need.
She says most people working in health care now have only known computer-based record and ordering systems.
Meanwhile, questions about payroll affecting Central and Western Health employees were raised in the House of Assembly yesterday afternoon.
Opposition Finance critic, Tony Wakeham questioned Health Minister John Haggie on concerns raised by health care workers in Central and Western Health.
Wakeham claims some employees at Central Health were being told to call their bank and defer their mortgage. Minister Haggie says there is an arrangement to pay all Central and Western Health employees. He says there are a small number of employees of Central health whose cheques or deposits were not made on time and that problem is being rectified.
