RCMP are commending the actions of a retail employee in Bay Roberts who prevented an elderly woman from falling victim to scammers.
Police received a call from a local business on Wednesday morning indicating that an elderly woman was in the store trying to purchase $5,000 dollars worth of various gift cards “to avoid being arrested.”
The store clerk recognized that the woman was likely being victimized by scammers and tried to convince the woman not to purchase the cards.
The woman was so fearful of being arrested that she did not believe the clerk and indicated that she was afraid to return home.
An RCMP officer from the Bay Roberts detachment spoke with the woman, explained the way scammers work, and assured her that she would not be arrested.
Police are thanking the store employee for their diligence.
