Today is World day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.
The day honours all of those injured or killed in motor vehicle collisions.
Government, along with members of the Opposition, the NDP, the STAND for Hannah Foundation, RCMP, RNC, Bicycle NL and Safety NL gathered at Confederation Building on Friday to remember those lost, and discuss how to prevent deaths due to distracted, impaired, and reckless driving.
Gail Thorne of the STAND for Hannah Foundation is the mother of Hannah Thorne, an eighteen-year-old girl killed by two reckless drivers who were street racing.
Thorne shared the story of her daughters death on July 7, 2016.
Just four kilometres from her home on a straight stretch of highway, the small Hyundai car Hannah was driving crested the hill, and met head-on with a Ford F-150 truck travelling at 160 km/h just seconds before, driving in the wrong lane.
Thorne says it is a simple fix to prevent this sort of deaths.
She says it’s as simple as everyone obeying the rules of the road.
She says a text, phone call, or getting somewhere quicker is not worth leaving others with a life of grief.
