A trip on the Labrador-Island Link was the cause of power outages which affected a number of areas of the province Friday evening.
Newfoundland Power reported outages affecting portions of St. John’s, Mount Pearl, Conception Bay North, Placentia Bay, Clarenville, Bishop’s Falls and Corner Brook.
The outage was blamed on a “loss of supply from NL Hydro.” NL Hydro says the outages were caused by a sudden trip on the Labrador-Island Link, and that the system had to shed load in order to balance the system.
In a statement to VOCM News, Hydro said they were still looking into the cause, “but it is a new and commissioning asset, so these bumps can happen. We have plenty of reserve supply and customers should be restored soon.”
Much of the lost power had been restored as of 8 p.m. Island time.
The island outages are due to a sudden trip of the Labrador Island Link. We have plenty of supply available to serve customers. Power restoration should begin shortly. These events can happen, especially with new assets. Learn more about why – https://t.co/5EIWp3ldJp
