The 2021 Canadian Boccia Championships finished this past weekend, with some local athletes claiming gold.
In the BC1/BC2 Team event, Newfoundland took gold, with members Michael Mercer of St. John’s, and Stephen Westcott of Conception Bay South, each earning back to back medals. Mercer earned a gold medal in BC2 individual, while Westcott captured bronze in the BC1 individual portion of the Championships. They were joined in team play on Saturday by Hayley Redmond, also from St. John’s, a member of the National Boccia Training Squad.
For his part, Mercer had direct access to his coach throughout the pandemic, as Cluney Mercer is also the young man’s father.
Mount Pearl’s Terrie Hefford captured silver in the BC4/BC5 Open Mixed Pairs division alongside her partner Marco Dispaltro, of St.-Jérôme, QC.
