The St. John’s Status of Women Council is eagerly awaiting more details on proposed pay equity legislation to be introduced this fall.
Premier Andrew Furey made the announcement on Tuesday during a scrum with reporters, but details on what would be included are scanty. All the premier would say at the time is that they’re hoping it will be a “progressive” piece of legislation.
Advocacy Coordinator with the organization, Bridget Clarke, says they were interested to hear that response from the premier and ultimately it leaves them with more questions.
They want to know what the work looks like, who has been consulted, what timelines are being worked with, and ultimately what the legislation will look like.
Clarke details what she would like to see from government.
She says it has to be wide-reaching and cover both the public and private sectors, and there needs to be a well-resourced oversight body to make sure the legislation is effective.
