A new poll commissioned by First Voice shows “overwhelming support” for the creation of a police oversight board.
The poll, which was conducted by MQO Research, indicates that 88 per cent of respondents support the creation of an independent, civilian-led, nonpartisan police oversight board. They say 52 per cent of those people strongly support the idea.
Caitlin Urquhart, Co-Chair of the First Voice Working Group on Police Oversight, says few public policy ideas enjoy such broad-based support, and the fact that there is such “decisive” public support shows that it resonates well beyond the urban Indigenous community.
As well, the organization notes that half of the respondents have a high level of confidence that police in the province are held to the same standards of justice as everyone else.
Fifty-two per cent of people disagreed with that suggestion, while 40 per cent indicated they trust the self-investigative structure used by the RNC Public Complaints Commission and SIRT-NL.
The creation of a civilian-led police oversight board was a proposal that the working group put forward in a draft report released last month, that also included proposals for improving the RNC Public Complaints Commission and SIRT-NL.
