CUPE President Sherry Hillier is targeting Mount Pearl Deputy Mayor Nicole Kielly, and questioning why she has been silent through the course of the eight-week municipal workers’ strike.
Hillier says Mayor Dave Aker has been in the media and quite vocal throughout the strike situation, yet the Deputy Mayor, who Hillier says campaigned on a platform supporting labour, has been silent.
Hillier says Kielly posted a video supporting labour, but one year after the election, they “have not seen Deputy Mayor Nicole Kielly.”
The city publicly released its final offer to the union last week. It includes 18 sick days for both existing and new employees; the introduction of two personal leave days within existing special leave allocations; a nine per cent wage increase over four years; a $1,000 signing bonus for every employee; and the withdrawal of two outstanding proposals.
Hillier says the dispute can be resolved tomorrow if the city agrees to take disciplinary action against some of its members off the table.
