A Newfoundland author whose books helped get the unmarked graves of 20 Newfoundland soldiers properly marked over a decade ago believes similar operations should be carried out in other areas of the province.
Bill Gorman published two books between 2009 and 2011, detailing the biographies of 263 soldiers from the Port Au Port Peninsula who fought in both World Wars, as well as in Korea.
Through his research, he discovered 19 unmarked graves of soldiers on the Port Au Port Peninsula, and one of his wife’s grandfathers in Mount Pearl.
Gorman contacted the Last Post Fund at the time for assistance with the undertaking.
He says he did what he could for veterans from the Port Au Port Peninsula, noting that he advocated that something similar be done in nearby Stephenville, but it’s a “great task” to take on and nobody wanted to do it.
Gorman believes there are many more veterans across the island who were also treated “unfairly” by being placed in unmarked graves.
He believes there are more graves out there, noting that 19 graves alone were found in small communities on the Port au Port Peninsula.
