An anniversary that is marked every year in Port aux Basques is being postponed.
October 14 marks the 80th anniversary of one of the worst wartime disasters to affect Newfoundland and Labrador the sinking of the passenger ferry the SS Caribou.
The vessel was struck by a torpedo from a German U-Boat, about 20 nautical miles southwest of Port aux Basques, claiming the lives of 137 passengers and crew including women and children.
Each year the town of Port aux Basques marks the loss of life, but Mayor Brian Button says because of the destruction caused by Hurricane Fiona, and the number of people still profoundly affected by the storm, they’ve decided to postpone.
He says the tragedy will be recognized this Remembrance Day and while the community is remembering the occasion, a formal ceremony is being postponed until the spring or next October.
