A special musical event is being held today at the Basilica to honour the memory of Newfoundland soldiers that are buried far from home.
The event, called The 18, celebrates the children of London’s Beatrix Potter School who discovered the graves of 18 World War I Newfoundland soldiers. Every year since, the school has been sending students to the graves to lay poppies and pay tribute to the soldiers.
Come From Away Star Petrina Bromley, who is part of the star-studded list of performers involved in the event, says it is an important story to tell.
Bromley says it is important to remember the sacrifices of the soldiers, and the fact that the school has been taking care of the soldiers’ graves, unbeknownst to anyone in this province, is a beautiful connection.
Also performing at the event will be the Ennis sisters, Mason Dicker and Annabelle Ramsay, The Royal Newfoundland Regiment Band, and more.
It is taking place at 2 p.m. at the Basilica. Admission is free but donations will be accepted for the Poppy Campaign.
