RCMP say at this time there appears to be no known connection between the homeowner and the deceased in a bizarre and frightening sequence of events that unfolded in the quiet community of Campbellton, Notre Dame Bay on the weekend.
RCMP are investigating a single vehicle crash, a car fire, house fire and sudden death that played out in the early morning hours on Saturday.
Campbellton Fire Chief Gary Mills says the initial call came in around 2:45 a.m. when three members were called to the crash and a separate vehicle fire at a nearby home.
Mills says they were concerned about the proximately of the car to the home.
He says they managed to knock down the car fire, but when he went around the house to check, he noticed some smoke coming out of the back top story.
That’s when the Lewisporte Fire Department had to be called in for assistance.
Mills says Campbellton is only a defensive department and can’t do interior attacks, which is why Lewisporte, with whom they have a mutual aid agreement, was called in. He says Campbellton fought the fire from the outside and Lewisporte members did the interior attack and between them, they put the house fire out.
That’s when the Lewisporte Firefighters found a body in the upstairs.
Which came as a surprise according to Mills because they were told there was no-one home.
The Chief Medical Examiner’s Office is working on determining the identity of the victim and the cause of death. RCMP are continuing their investigation piecing together the sequence of events.
