RNC Constable Doug Snelgrove has lost an appeal of his conviction for sexual assault.
CBC first reported the news last night, citing multiple sources.
Lawyers for Snelgrove had asked the Court of Appeal to stay or set aside his conviction for the assault which occurred more than eight years ago.
The Crown had sought a dismissal or, if the court found critical errors, a fourth trial in the case.
Two of the first trials were nullified by judges’ mistakes.
Snelgrove was found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman in her apartment, while in uniform and on duty, after driving her home from downtown St. John’s in 2014.
Since then, at least a dozen women have come forward to accuse other officers, some retired, of sexual assault, harassment or misconduct.
Snelgrove, meanwhile, could still appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada.
He’s been free on bail since December, pending the outcome of this appeal, but it’s unclear if that will continue.
The Department of Justice is not commenting on the Snelgrove appeal until it’s released by the court.
