Canada’s premiers have written Prime Minister Justin Trudeau with concerns regarding violent crime.
In a letter sent to Ottawa on Friday, the premiers wish for the federal government to do more to protect communities from repeat offenders committing violent crimes.
The premiers are once again calling for changes to the Criminal Code of Canada to strengthen the bail system after requests for Ottawa to change the legislation in January were not addressed.
They say it’s time for government to step up funding to support programs under the Gun and Gang Violence Action Fund—something they were disappointed to see left out of the 2023 budget.
Leaders from across Canada say they’ve met with the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police in recent weeks to fully understand the risks and threats of violent repeat offenders.
While they promise to continue working on addressing provincial issues such as violence, mental health and addictions, and gang activity, they’re asking Ottawa to take the necessary measures to ensure the safety of Canadians and law enforcement officers.
