Today marks the one-year anniversary of the arrival of the first plane of Ukrainians to the province.
The conflict saw serious escalation in February of last year, which has triggered one of Europe’s largest refugee crises since the second world war.
The first airlift brought just over 170 newcomers to the province. Since that time, over 2,700 Ukrainians have chosen to call Newfoundland and Labrador home.
Immigration Minister Gerry Byrne says the day is a significant one.
He says not only do the refugees have more secure futures, but Newfoundland and Labrador has a more secure future because of the skills they have brought.
He says the people of Newfoundland and Labrador have been incredibly welcoming.
Byrne says Ukrainians are choosing to come to Newfoundland and Labrador at a higher rate than anywhere in Canada.
