The RNC has laid charges against a 51-year-old Paradise man in connection with a street racing incident that resulted in a two vehicle crash during the rush hour on Topsail Road in St. John’s in late March.
The crash occurred around 5:30 on the afternoon of March 29 in the area of Cowan Avenue.
A black car collided with a blue mini-van, as the van was turning left onto Cowan Avenue.
Damage was extensive and both drivers were taken to hospital for treatment.
The investigation revealed that the car had been speeding on Topsail Road, travelling in excess of 130 km/h just prior to the crash.
Police believe the car was involved in a street race with a blue car in the moments leading up to the crash.
The 51-year-old driver of the black car has been charged with dangerous driving, while the driver of the other car believed to be racing with the black car was issued a ticket under the Highway Traffic Act.
More Dangerous Driving
Meanwhile, police have also laid dangerous driving charges in connection with a four-vehicle crash on Kenmount Road in St. John’s on the morning of April 4.
The collision occurred around 10:45 a.m. near the intersection with Pippy Place.
RNC say a black Honda Civic changed into the centre lane to pass a westbound car and collided with a Honda Accord, forcing the Accord into oncoming traffic where it collided with two eastbound vehicles.
Police say the Honda Civic was driving in excess of 120 km/h on Kenmount Road in the moments leading up to the collision, while the Accord was travelling in excess of 130 km/h.
The driver of the black Civic, a 25-year-old woman from Portugal Cove-St. Phillip’s, and the driver of the black Accord, a 21-year-old St. John’s man, have each been charged with dangerous driving. They were released to appear in court at a later date.
Police are asking anyone with information or video footage of the incident to contact the RNC or Crime Stoppers.
