As wildfires continue to burn across the country, the MHA for Exploits is expressing his concern about how prepared Newfoundland and Labrador is if a large fire were to break out here.
Pleaman Forsey’s district was hit with a forest fire last summer. With one waterbomber out of commission, he wonders how capable the province is when it comes to tackling natural disasters.
He says the fleet was constantly rotating in an attempt to tackle the multiple fires burning in central, but the province did not have enough resources—which led to the blaze escalating beyond control. “We certainly needed the fifth water bomber at that time, and we certainly need it now.”
The minister, Elvis Loveless, says it will probably be the end of the year before they decide where they are going with that fifth aircraft.
