The snow has begun in the south and will soon be headed into regions north, including metro.
Provincial government offices in the St. John’s metro region are shutting down at noon for the remainder of the day in advance of the nasty winter blast headed for the Avalon Peninsula.
About 10 cm is expected this afternoon with another 10 tonight on the Avalon. Slightly lesser amounts are expected in the east and the Burin Peninsula.

Winds will be around 40 km/h but increase to 60 to 70 tonight.
Some schools did not open at all while others opted for early dismissal.
Meanwhile, snow crews in the metro region are ready to go.
That’s according to the Mayor of Mount Pearl, Dave Aker, and provincial Minister of Transportation, John Abbott, who each say their teams are ready to go.
Aker says staff has been working on the equipment since the beginning of August.
He says about half of the usual compliment is on, so around 30 are ready to go.
Minister Abbott says crews his crews have already hit the road this season.
He says they reported back a couple of weeks ago and were out salting the roads this past weekend.
