A GoFundMe set up to help the wife and children of a Placentia man found murdered in Alberta raised enough money in just a few days to bring them all back to Newfoundland.
Margie Hatfield’s son Mark O’Keefe was found shot and dumped on a road south of Fort McMurray last week. In her last conversation with him, he was desperately looking for cash to help pay off the money he owed for drugs, and Hatfield believes he was used as an example for others who owed cash.
She tells VOCM News that Mark struggled all his life with mental health and addictions, and despite the violent circumstances surrounding his passing, she describes it as a “relief” from the pain he had been suffering.
In the meantime, Hatfield is now concentrating on bringing his wife and children back to Newfoundland to help them rebuild their live and “give them a little Christmas. “It’s going to be a hard Christmas, but…those three little children need to have their normalcy, some sense of normalcy in their life.”
