Justice Minister John Hogan is firing back after the PCs withdrew from the province’s committee on electoral reform.
PC MHA Barry Petten says they will no longer be participating due to several issues including a limited number of meetings and a lack of input.
Hogan says he was “disappointed and surprised” to hear of the PC’s decision.
He says consultations were done through EngageNL and everyone, including Petten, voted to do even further consultations.
Hogan also says in the summer of 2022, he wrote letters to all MHAs asking them to speak with their constituents and write back about what amendments they would like to see. He didn’t receive any responses from the official opposition.
He says the party likes to “complain” that they only get to propose amendments to bills when it hits the floor of the House. Hogan says the party now has the opportunity to propose changes, but and they aren’t taking advantage of it.
