The provincial government is partnering with SmartICE to monitor and maintain snowmobile routes between Nain and Natuashish.
Through a combination of technology and local knowledge and observations, SmartICE provides the latest information possible to help travelers plan their routes, whether it’s a quick trip, or a lengthy journey.
Manager of Nunatsiavut Operations, Rex Holwell, says the information SmartICE provides will help people before they head out.
He says it’s a natural progression for SmartICE to take over maintenance of the winter trails on the north coast because it’s work they’re already doing.
SmartICE provides the latest information through the SIKU app, but they also provide detailed printed colour maps of ice conditions which are available in places like the local post office in areas where internet access is not available, or not reliable.
