Marine Atlantic ferry crossings on the Gulf were cancelled today and a number of flights scheduled to and from Halifax have been cancelled or delayed due to a massive winter storm that dumped more than 100 cm of snow on parts of Nova Scotia.
Services in that province have ground to a halt, with parts of Cape Breton under a State of Emergency.
Program Director with Stingray Radio in the Maritimes, Dan Barton, says many in Nova Scotia are comparing the intensity of the snowstorm to Hurricane Juan which wrecked devastation on the province in 2003.
He says the snow is finally letting up, and the focus now is on the clean up.
The Halifax region got more than 80 cm while Cape Breton is dealing with more than 100 cm. Residents are being asked to stay off the roads while crews clear the roads.
Marine Atlantic Update
Marine Atlantic expects it will be later today before the terminal building in North Sydney is cleared of snow and reopened to traffic.
Spokesperson Darrell Mercer says there is no backlog at the terminal at this time, simply because traffic has been unable to get to North Sydney because of the State of Emergency due to the sheer volume of snow that’s fallen on the region.
He says they’re hoping to reopen the terminal later today and are hopeful that this evening’s crossings will be able to go ahead.
