The owner of the Stephenville Airport is hoping to reestablish commercial airline service at the facility by the end of the year.
Carl Dymond was responding to growing questions about plans for the property which he hopes will become “one of the biggest airports in Atlantic Canada.”
“I’d love to see 25 to 30 flights an hour leaving this airport,” says Dymond “I want this to be a place for people to see the airport and all the amenities around.”
The Stephenville Dymond International Airport announced the start of an Infrastructure Revitalization Plan in late January, but Dymond is reluctant to talk about timelines or other specifics until the details are hammered out.
“We’ve been talking to a couple of airlines that are ready to come in, we’re just not announcing until we have a deal in place.”
He says the lighting project, started before he took the facility over is nearing completion, and they’re working closely with Calgary-based Sprung Structures to get some aircraft hangars on-site.
“They’re currently being designed and sourced,” says Dymond “they have enough inventory now, we’re just looking for the right size for the airlines that we’re looking to bring in.”
He figures it will take 18 to 20 weeks to have those structures installed once they get started in the spring.
The cost of the work needed according to Dymond will be “several hundred million at least.” In the meantime, Dymond is dismissing questions and criticism surrounding his ownership of the airport and his plans there.
“I don’t even pay attention to that nonsense,” says Dymond.
